I came across this article tonight and am wondering how could Arizona’s Dept. of Ed. REALLY be serious about “no accents” in the classroom?
I mean I do feel that English teachers need to have a strong command of the English language, but this stance doesn’t sound like it’s about a strong command of the English language…it’s getting too personal. I just feel that there is a bigger issue here…and though Arizona may be in the hot seat right now, I do feel these issues are, sadly, everywhere.
Thank you, NCTE, for taking a stand.
[And Dr. Dannenberg, if you ever see this, I just want to THANK YOU for teaching your students the knowledge of the English language, while also reminding us how important it is to value and appreciate “differences” in language too! There IS a difference!]
